Select Agents and Toxins

The Cornell University Select Agent Program is managed by the EHS Biosafety Team - please visit the EHS Select Agents and Toxins Web site or contact EHS at 255-8200 for more information. Any possession, use, or transfer of a select agent requires registration with the appropriate federal authorities (HHS/CDC, or USDA) as well as the IBC before any activities can commence.

Toxins on the Select Agents list include many commonly used research materials. There are threshold limits, above which require registration with HHS/CDC and the IBC.

If the aggregate amounts of the following toxins under the control of a single principal investigator do not, at any time, exceed the threshold limits below, activities are exempt from federal registration but the toxin use must still be reviewed and approved by the IBC:

  • 0.5 milligrams (mg) of Botulinum neurotoxins
  • 5 mg of Staphylococcal enterotoxins
  • 100 mg of Abrin, Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin, Conotoxin, Ricin, Saxitoxin, Shigatoxin, Shiga-like ribosome inactivating protein, and Tetrodotoxin
  • 1,000 mg of diacetoxyscirpenol and T-2 toxin
